Three R’s of Yachting: Racin’, Reachin’ and Roundin’
By three r | July 6, 2007
It’s not easy to find what the three r’s of yachting are. The time spent searching for yachting’s definition of the three r’s was not fruitful as I have only come across a couple definitions, which did not match each other. Being a sailor myself I had to turn to the definition: Racin’, Reachin’ and Roundin’. There are several articles that mention these, one of them being the Sailing Anarchy Yacht Club, an officially recognized USSA club which was formed to create a sailing club anybody can join.
The second definition of yachting three r’s comes from a blog called Unlikely Passage. Their definition of the three r’s of sailing is: Red Right Returning: When you come back into a channel, the red marker stays on your right, the green marker stays on your left. Easy, right? Well, except early in the morning perhaps.” This mistake is very easy to make!

The Three R’s of the Environment
By three r | July 4, 2007
Our quest on finding the most definitions of Three R’s takes us today to another topic, enviroment. This idea came from a fellow blogger from g2bgreen.com which suggested I do an article on the environment. The Three R’s of the environment are: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, need i say more?
“Every year, Americans throw away 50 billion food and drink cans, 27 billion glass bottles and jars, and 65 million plastic and metal jar and can covers. More than 30% of our waste is packaging materials. Where does it all go? Some 85% of our garbage is sent to a dump, or landfill, where it can take from 100 to 400 years for things like cloth and aluminum to decompose. Glass has been found in perfect condition after 4,000 years in the earth!
We are quickly running out of space. It’s time to learn the three R’s of the environment: reduce, reuse, recycle. Then practice what you preach: don’t buy things you don’t need or items that come in wasteful packaging or that cannot be recycled. Reuse and recycle whatever you can.”
Another mention of environment and the shows that many enviromental quotes are based on Three R’s :
“Implementing the three R’s - reduce, recycle, reuse, will help you save money and help protect the environment! And, if we protect the environment we are reducing our stress by living in a healthy world.”
Catherine & Byron Pulsifer, from Recycle, Reduce, Reuse
Not to be outdone, a third article related to the Three r’s is from a point of view of implementing the three r’s. The article by Carla E. Dearing takes a look at how “reuse” is the hardest of the three r’s:
Re-use is easy to understand but manually intensive to execute. Kurtzig’s innovation is a web based marketplace that increases the productivity of the match between those wishing to dispose of items and those in need. There are fees involved but it appears to be a very low margin business. Consequently, there may be a “social business enterprise” here that could engage more companies to meet a marketplace need that heretofore was too “micro” to reach.
Comments at the bottom of the article are very interesting.

Three R’s: IPHONE
By three r | July 3, 2007
The surge of iphone related stories has prompted a look at three r’s of iphone. This is hard to come by as the iphone is a fairly new toy with relatively slow internet access, however some some interesting ideas were come by. The first, the three r’s of the iphone, are its three calling plans that are newly available from AT&T.
Next the three r’s of the iphone are its three new ads which were rolled out by apple. The calamari shows off the internet features of the iphone while the others focus on other features.
Another mention of three comes from engadget and the speculation that “Apple readying three million iPhones for launch?“. As far as I have read, so far only 500,000 have been sold, which means there are still plenty left for the crazed fanboys and fangirls willing to fork over six franklins for this thing.
It is the author’s opinion that the three r’s of the iphone are Phone, Camera, Music Player. What are your thoughts?

Replacement alternatives, Reduction alternatives, Refinement alternatives.

Very interesting and touching a very sensitive subject is using animals to test products, labatory testing. In the search for the Three R’s, a new definition presented itself, this time in a very interesting subject. In the August 8, 1996 (old but still very relative) edition of the Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) journal, was published an article called “The Three Rs: The Way Forward”, which focuses on the three r’s. The three r’s of scientific research are: replacement alternatives, reduction alternatives, and refinement alternatives.
This article highlights and describes the three r’s of scientific research. An abstract: Laws that mandate replacement alternatives, reduction alternatives, and refinement alternatives (the Three Rs) in scientific research have been passed in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, and the European Union over the past decade. Full implementation of this newly developed legislation depends upon scientists’ ability to understand animal welfare issues and to accept the legitimacy of the public’s interest in the conduct of science. The European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM), established by the European Commission in 1991 to promote the scientific and regulatory acceptance of alternative methods, recently sponsored a workshop to discuss the current status of the Three Rs and to make recommendations aimed at achieving greater acceptance of the concept of humane experimental technique.
According to this article, the origins of the three r’s comes from a proposal made in 1954 by Charles Hume, founder of the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW).

Refresh, Renew, Revive
By three r | July 1, 2007
In my pursuit of finding three r’s, I have become more aware of what my surroundings. An anonymous reader dropped me a note that the film with Adam Sandler, “Reign Over Me“, Adam Sandler is holding a piece of paper titled “Refresh, Renew, Revive“. I have scoured the web to see if I can find the screenshot of this, but without luck. Please post a comment if you do come across it and I will post it here.
Not much info on the net about “Refresh, Renew, Revive”, mostly christian and family books. An interesting dictionary definition of “Refresh” yields results which has all the words of Refresh, revive and renew in the definition. Results also point to a variety of beauty and help products, such as this lineless soothing mask.

Computer Science and the Three R’s
By three r | June 27, 2007
Today we turn into a completely different topic and start with computer science definition of three r’s, especially related to UML modeling language and Use Cases. I am sure that those of you who are programmers, will already be familiar with use cases, but what the three r’s of use cases are? “Realization, Refinement, and Reification“. On my quest to get the most three r’s definitions on the web, I have come across this very interesting paper written by Russell R. Hurlbut, from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Abstract:
Version 1.1 of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) includes a behavioral elements subpackage devoted to use cases. This paper identifies three primary mechanisms for expressing use cases in design models: realization, refinement, and reification. A use case is typically realized in terms of collaborating objects belonging to classes. A use case may be refined through a collaboration of use cases that provide the specification for each of the elements of the entity specified by the superordinate use case. A use case is reified through a use case instance that constitutes the performance of the sequence of actions specified in a scenario of the use case. This paper describes the full set of semantics for use cases. Diagrams of UML model elements tailored for expressing these three use case mechanisms are developed. Using the graphical models and semantics presented, the relationships among these three models are explored to derive guidelines for appropriate representations of use cases when developing a domain model.
Very interesting reading indeed.

Three r’s: the Free dictionary explanation

Turns out there are many different definitions for three r’s depending on what industry you are affiliated with. Our first look takes us to to the free dictionary where the definition is as follows:
the three R’s: reading, writing, and arithmetic (= mathematics). By the age of 6, all our pupils have a firm grasp of the three R’s.
This definition seems to be education related. With the third R being arithmetic. What is your favorite three r’s definition?

The definition of everyone’s “three r’s” varies greatly. I started this blog to monitor and collect what people coming from different backgrounds (industries) think of as their three r’s.
